Abstract:This paper sets up a slagging model and incorporates it with existing coal combustion framework. The combustion characteristics and slagging features in a novel slagging coal combustor are numerically studied by the validated coal combustion framework coupled with the slagging model. It is revealed that ignition and combustion can be considerably improved in a reducing atmosphere with strong recirculation of mass and heat upstream near inlets by comparison with different equivalence ratios. It is shown that the thickness, velocity, temperature and the heat flux profiles of the molten slag layer are reasonably predicted by the slagging model. It is demonstrated that the proposed slagging model can be adopted for designing and retrofitting of slagging combustors and reactors burning coal.
