In view of the 12/8 bearingless switched reluctance motors, there exists the strong coupling between the control of torque and levitation forces. By optimizing inductance curve, this paper studies a 12/4 bearingless switched reluctance motor. By constructing the flat region of the motor inductance and providing the torque and levitation forces in different inductance regions, the natural decoupling is achieved between the generation of torque and levitation forces. Considering the two-phase conduction and the feature of the air-gap magnetic circuit, the mathematical models of the torque and levitation forces are established and verified by finite element analysis. Based on the relationship between current, position angle, levitation force, then through the system simulation in Matlab/Simulink and experiments of prototype motor with new hardware platform, the demonstrated performance is confirmed. © 2018, Electrical Technology Press Co.
