Abstract:The surface damage mechanics of WC/Co is investigated by the indentation and the diamond scratch method, where the material removal mechanism and the surface integrity are evaluated, including the plastic deformation, the formation and propagation of the cracks and the grains dislodgement. The results showed that the plastic deformation of WC/Co is dependent on the loading speed and the indentation positions where the indented percentage of WC grain area differs, and the Vickers indentation test also indicates that the radial cracks always originate at the phase boundaries of WC and Co, and the propagation of the generated cracks direct along the sharp wedges of the diamond indenter, which finally terminate at the phase boundaries. Typically, the material removal mechanism contains three varied modes, that is, ductile material removal, groove sides fracture and WC grain dislodgements. In addition, the oxidation of WC/Co is studied by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Raman spectroscopy, and the oxidation products are identified. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.
