Abstract:DNS results show that the boundary layer flow transition is a process of the vortex “buildup”. The large ring-like vortex can be commonly observed in the process of the boundary layer flow transition in the experiment and the DNS simulation. The formation of the large vortex ring is one of the key issues for this process. To reveal the mechanism of the large vortex ring formation, a DNS simulation is carried out and a new omega vortex identification method is utilized to visualize the vortices. Based on the observation of DNS results, it is found that there is no such a process that Λ-shaped vortex self-deforms to the ring like vortex. The mechanism of the large vortex ring formation is caused by the unstable high strain rate layer. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. All rights reserved.
