Effects of B-containing composite flux on the microstructures and mechanical properties of ADC12 alloys

摘要:The effects of B-containing composite flux on microstructures and mechanical properties of ADC12 alloys were investigated by OM, XRD, SEM and EDS. The results show that when added the B-containing composite flux in ADC12 alloys and the mass ratio of Na2B4O7 and KBF4 in flux is 1:1, the morphology of iron-rich phase transformed from needle-like to less-detrimental Chinese script, the average length of eutectic silicon reduces to the minimum of 22.15 μm at holding time of 90 min. Meanwhile, the iron removal rate, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation of alloys reach the maximum, 28.7%, 159.12 MPa, 222.08 MPa and 1.76%, respectively. The improvement of mechanical properties is mainly attributed to the transformation of iron-rich phase from needle-like β-Al5FeSi to less-detrimental Chinese script α-AlFe(Mn)Si, Fe reduction and decrease in the length of the eutectic silicon. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that AlB2 and Fe2B can be formed after the addition of composite flux. The mechanism of purification process was also discussed. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.
