Abstract:For optical fibre-based sensors embedded inside the composite, an eye-shaped interface would possibly be formed around the sensor. The strain transfer relationship of the eye-shaped structure interface is studied. A mechanical model is established to deduce the strain transfer relationship between the embedded optical fibre and the composite material. Subsequently, the method is verified via the finite element method. The error between the theoretical solution and the numerical one is within 5%. Finally, an experiment was conducted to test the host strain and the strain in the embedded optical fibre. The results indicate that the centre of the embedded optical fibre could approximately detect the host strain. The study can provide a model for analysing the strain on the embedded optical fibre. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
