Abstract:This paper deals with the fabrication and properties of a novel ultra-light, high temperature vacuum insulated panel (HT-VIP) composed of SiC nanowire core material, SiC nanowires reinforced SiC coating and sealing outer shell, which will have great potential to be used as thermal protection system material. Here, the ultra-light SiC nanowire core material assembled by numerous interweaving SiC nanowires was prepared by in situ growth of SiC nanowires in the pores of carbon foam via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), followed by high temperature oxidation of carbon foam. The SiC nanowires reinforced SiC coating with excellent mechanical property is a kind of SiC nanowires reinforced SiC matrix composite, which was in situ fabricated by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI). The sealing outer shell is compact and smooth to prevent air pass in and out, which was fabricated by CVD technique. The prepared HT-VIP sample possesses the property combination of low density (0.43 g.cm(-3)), high compressive strength (3.26 MPa) and excellent thermal insulation property (ranged from 0.44 W.m(-1).K-1 to 1.11 W.m(-1).K-1 within the temperature from 20 degrees C to 900 degrees C). Even after 10 times thermal shock cycles, the prepared HT-VIP sample retains its original performance.
