Abstract:The numerical method used to calculate the infrared signature of an exhaust system was presented, and its validation was conducted by comparing the calculation results with the experimental data of a subscale exhaust system in experimental conditions. Based on the analysis of components' radiation contributions, film cooling and a low-emissivity coating were applied to the centerbody and the divergent flaps, which were the two main radiation contributors, to reduce their radiation. Then, the effects of film cooling and the low-emissivity coating on the infrared signature of the full-size exhaust system in ground running conditions were explored by the validated calculation method. The results indicated that, by reducing the temperature and the emissivity of the centerbody and divergent flaps, the infrared signature of the exhaust system could be significantly reduced in the directions of 0 approximate to +/- 15deg and +/- 40 approximate to +/- 60deg. For the case studied in this paper, the integrated radiation intensity of the full-size exhaust system at the vectoring angles of 0, 10, and 20deg was reduced by 51.24, 50.90, and 58.16% in a 0deg measurement direction, respectively.
