Abstract:In order to meet the requirements of advanced aero-engine combustor for fuel atomization quality, a dual pre-filmed Hartmann whistle ultrasonic nozzle was designed. The characteristics of fuel flow and atomization were studied experimentally using a laser particle size analyzer and a high-speed camera. The results show that the droplet size is uniform with a narrow distribution of its Sauter mean diameter (SMD) variation from 4.2μm to 9μm, and the air-liquid ratio (ALR) of the nozzle is low and varies from 0.27 to 0.54 under the precondition to meet the nozzle mass flow rate. Within the test operating conditions, SMD is basically not affected by the distance from measurement location to nozzle outlet, while it is affected mainly by fuel pressure and the distance from resonator to nozzle outlet. The atomization angle varies from 135° to 180° and it changes little with fuel pressure, while it is affected mainly by the distance from resonator to nozzle outlet. © 2019, Editorial Department of Journal of Propulsion Technology.
