Abstract:In view of the large size and high consumption of metal for existing marine thermal desalination device, an integrated plate-type desalination unit with cooling water from diesel engine cylinder as heat source was designed. The desalination experiment system and separator performance testing system were built to study the pressure drop and separation performance of the plate-type separator under 5 different working conditions. Experimental results show that the pressure drop of plate-type separator is fairly small and has limited impact on vacuum; the first stage of the plate-type separator, which undertakes the main separation task, has the separation efficiency of above 99%. The simulated pressure drop calculated by the SST κ-ω model is in good agreement with the experimental data with mean error < 5%. The simulated results show that the steam density plays a major role in separation efficiency for finer droplets with diameter smaller than 3 μm while the separation efficiency for droplets with diameter larger than 3 μm is highly dependent on the steam velocity; the diameter of most droplets entrained by the steam at the outlet of the evaporator in the desalination system is at least 6 μm. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
