Influences of Copper Shield on Eddy-current Loss and Stress for a Rotor of High-speed PM BLDC Motor

Abstract:Attaching high conductive copper layer between the sleeve and permanent magnets can reduce the eddy-current loss caused by asynchronous time and space field harmonics in the rotor of high-speed permanent magnet brushless direct-current (PM BLDC) motors. In this paper, the effect of copper shields with different thicknesses on reducing rotor eddy-current loss was verified, and then the stress calculation procedure for the rotor with multi-layer rings including copper shield were established. A method for calculating the presetting interference fittings of the interfaces was proposed. All the calculations take into account the influences of presetting interference fittings, centrifugal force and temperature rise. On this basis, the influences of copper shield thickness on the maximum stress of each part of the rotor were analyzed. The validity of the analytical method was verified by simulation using finite element method and prototype test. © 2018 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.
